It was at 3:35pm on Sunday afternoon that Jeff King became the first musher to reach the Bering Sea coast and the checkpoint village of Unalakleet. He received the Wells Fargo Gold Coast award and $2,500 in Gold Nuggets. The real story this time isn’t about who came in first, it’s who came in second about 40 minutes later. Lance Mackey passed Paul Gebhardt who left Kaltag a few minutes before him. He also passed Martin Buser who was about an hour ahead of him out of Kaltag. Martin did arrive 2 minutes later in 3rd place and Paul Gebhardt 5 minutes after that. The race to Nome is on!
