Is lance the first out of candle or is he still behind Jeff
Thanks for the updates. We are trying to follow the race from Minnesota and it helps to have your updates.
The mushing forum hosted by the bssd iditaproject is still up and is discussing the AAS
Great to have your updates, many many thanks! I am envisioning one of those Mackey/Swenson “78 finishes into Nome! So ditto to Gunnar’s response, we are really appreciative here in Minnesota!
For family reasons I am “stuck” in LA, I think the worst part of being outside. I just want to thank you for your coverage…and say go Lance go!
was at candle to witness the top 10 mushers in and outta there, king waited in candle just when mackey was coming in,he came in just in time to sign in and take off,i’m sure king heard me “yellin”welcome to candle Lance, bye,(than i yelled)”WAY TO GO LANCE,WAY TO GO”witnessing this outcome MAKES a grown women like me “wanna cry”i’m a former vet student from the chucki college at kotzebue(thru university of alaska fairbanks),all the dogs looked lively, seaveys team wanted to keep going while he was feeding them,so did brooks team, looks like all the dogs are in their best racing SPIRITS them selves,i’m keeping my Head HIgh,to all the mushers for this,”1983″iditarod”winner joe may,one of the race officials at the candle check point said”my gosh this is a TOTALLY different race than the iditarod,kusko-300, kobuk 440 are any other races he’s seen so far”the race officals have good ham radio operations for this race, also the locals like the shermans, weinards, fairbanks and kotzebue-buckland-deering people are using vhf radios channel 68 for communicating,in case sno-go problems,Vic Lawyor a pilot and a candle local himself has been busy himself with the planes coming in on the “Candle River”makes shift airport,we even had the last born “candle kid”dickie moto sr.”there(born in the middle 60’s)to witness this historical event,in the end every-one there, making sure candle end is having a safe trip there, dog’s first.Vets,Race Officals, and People from all walks of life are having the best welcome for mushers in and otta there,”GOOD LUCK”to the WINNER,and thank you all for mushing in this historical event,MAY GOD RICHLEY BLESS YOU ALL
Hi josh, are we gonna have photo’s put on from the Candle Check-point,it was a photo perfect turn around event there, also forgot to mention Lance has been a Very Special finisher in his pass Big Races, because rural alaskan eskimos can relate to his cancer surviving ordeal,we have hundreds of survivors all across alaska(myself)one of them cancer survivors,i also was born at candle,i also lost my precious mother to cancer july 7th,2007,whom just turned 75 may 20th,also my brother wyatt whom didn’t wake up here in deering on june 9th,who we know was suffering strokes, last winter before this,so i hope i can peacefully dedicate my mom angeline moto, and brother wyatt moto’s favorite bible verse “PSALMS 23:”to all the mushers, who raced in thi Historical event.AMEN!!!
Something to say?
Hi Josh,
First of all, I have to say THANK YOU for covering the Sweepstakes. I am a teacher, and although I currently live in Southern California, I have been following the Iditarod for 7 years with my students. I am a HUGE fan (fanatic?) of the race — and have been very excited about the AAS since it was announced a year ago.
I’m sure you’ve heard from others about the “shortcomings”
of the official AAS website… I understand the many reasons for the less-than-state-of-the art technology — and would actually find it charming except that I dying for more information!
Your blog is definitely the place to turn for race information, so that’s why I’m writing you with my current question. If I’ve read the rules correctly, the starting time differentials will be made up at some not-yet-disclosed checkpoint — the secret location of which will not be made known until the first musher gets there. Do you know if the location will be announced anywhere — like the website or your blog or something — once the mushers start making up the time?
It’s frustrating not having check-out times on the leaderboard — we won’t know when the times have been made up — of if they already have! (I had actually assumed that the differentials would be taken on the outbound route.) Anyway, wherever it’s going to happen, if it’s going to happen, will have to be someplace where there are enough checkers to keep track of it.
Do you have any news about this? If so– I’d love to hear it! Keep up the great blog — and THANKS AGAIN!!
