Before I get to the story, King & Seavey just left Solomon within minutes of each other, and I just got a report from a pilot that landed a few moments ago that Seavey is now in the lead, he witnessed this from the air, just out of Solomon.

Kudos to Kevin Klott from ADN for reporting the following story:

…..Who gets it done could become an issue tonight.

Perhaps the most interesting twist in this race could unfold when the first musher across the line discovers he has been duped by race organizers. Whoever crosses first underneath the burled arch - the same monument used for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race — might not be the winner.

“There was a question (at a 3-1/2 hour mushers meeting) about how we were doing the (race) time,” race marshal Al Crane said Wednesday morning.

Mushers asked Crane, “How could you add minutes (secretly) at the checkpoints” to offset the two-minute gaps in the staggered start of 16 teams.

Mushers didn’t understand how easy it was, Crane said, so he told them the time differential wouldn’t be made up at all.

“Nobody is going to screw with the times (on the trail),” Crane said. “I don’t understand why they had a problem with the time differential. OK, the first team that comes back wins. I’ll explain (adding the time) after the fact. Nobody’s going to get hurt by it. (Now) they all have the same strategy - they want to win.”

Mushers thus departed Nome with the idea there would be no time differential, meaning each musher technically left at 10 a.m., despite the two-minute staggered start. Considering there are no mandatory rests, race marshal Al Crane said, there was no place to make up the time.

But really, to keep things fair, Crane said, the time will be made up when each musher crosses the finish line. The winner will be based on the best total elapsed time.

“I don’t want them to know all the information,” Crane said.

Theoretically, of course, whose first across the finish line and who is first on elapsed time might prove a moot point. Of the three frontrunners going for the biggest payout in the history of an Alaska professional sporting event, King left Front Street in Nome only four minutes ahead of Seavey and 10 minutes ahead of Mackey.

Al Crane is not being very smart, he could be setting the race up to get sued. If the times work out just right you could have 2 mushers getting a $100,000 payday EACH and I wouldn’t blame them for bringing a lawsuit. He’d better forget about adding a differential and do what was agreed on by him and the mushers at the meeting.

So this could cause a huge problem… not informiong the mushers prior to the race - how about at Safety?? This does not seem fair in light of how close this is going to be. Bad PR to say the least.

WOW

I hope Seavey beats King by at least ten minutes then.
GO MITCH GO

Leave him in your snow dust!!!

WOW!!!!!! How can you just make up rules as you go?

The JUDGE didn’t want the mushers to “know all of the information”????

If Mackey can’t beat king, I really hope Seavey will.

Who are these people running this race????
Didn’t the judge get a copy of the rule book?

I’m with Jones, I wouldn’t blame the mushers for entering a law suit, infact I would expect it.

I am simply CONFUSED…and I will say, I wouldn’t want to be the one informing ANY musher crossing the finish line…not after running 408 miles…this IS crazy…Whats happening with Mackey?? The leader board seems way behind…?? Go King, Go Seavey… I just hope the “Best Team” takes home the $$$…It would be a real shame to end this historic race with hard feelings, and a bad taste in everyones mouth…Lets just pray it is a fair finish for whomever!!

Why are so many people rooting AGAINST Jeff?

umm not against him, great musher and ambassador of the sport and all, but

have you ever spent time around him?-not just met him? his attitude just didn’t sit real well with me. probably just me though.

No, No, Not just you, Cabin Fever. He is arrogant, and self-serving, and a rule bender and expects everyone to be o.k with all that.

Incredible. This really could be a mess. Hopefully something was lost in the English to English translation between Crane and Klott. . . ? What if King crosses the line 4 minutes or less ahead of Seavy . . . . The spreadsheet shows Seavey with 5 minutes ahead of King @ Cape Nome (with a 9 minute lead) I’m a new fan of the sport, these mushers and dogs are amazing . . . . I hope Crane’s “plan” does not lead to pandimonium . . .

I am just a fan from Australia who loved real competitions.

I think Al Crane has been totally pathetic. Musher must know all the rules before they start the race. It is fair enough that the musher with the best time wins. This must take into account the time differential at the start. This is clearly a very close race between mushers, so the best must win.

The old rules need to be followed. Then, where they break down because 100 years have passed, judges and mushers must agree on necessary revisions. They need to be put down in writing before the start.

I feel that the time differential should have been made up at Candle by adding X minutes to the arrival time of each musher, except for bib #2. This would not have created any problems as the arrival was still far away.

One Iditarod was won by 1 second by Lance’s father, so history can repeat itself.

I like to praise Josh for keeping everybody on the net informed the best he could.

The spreadsheet with the updates it totally pathetic for a race which is only run every 25 years. So the lead up time was extremely long. Following the Iditarod was great as the information was very timely conveyed through the web site. I am sure once in 25 years the Iditarod model could have been copied. Satellite phones can be used and maybe endorsements in terms of free time on them could have been asked for.

Although I prefer Lance to win, I am happy to see Mitch across the line ahead of Jeff.

I have just starting paying attention to dog racing so please enlighten me about Mr. King…

Something to say?
